First black female deputy joins Somerset County Sheriff’s Office

History is being made in Somerset County. It's a first for their Sheriff's Office, as a new force has joined their squad.

Kayla Corbin is the first black female deputy. Corbin started the Academy in January and it was a long six months. From there, she graduated in June and a week later, she started working on the road.

Before being out in the line of duty, she was with fire EMS and worked as a dispatcher at Somerset's Emergency Services.

With her newest job, it can be an advantage being a woman. "It may help a little bit in de-escalating situations, as far as if you're dealing with a female inside there, so she may want to talk to another female instead of male officer, so it helps out a little bit," Corbin says.

But the biggest role she's had under her belt is being a role model for young girls.

Corbin also tells us, "I don't really look at the whole black female first thing I just looked at as another female inspiring females that yes you can do the same thing as a male profession."

A humbled Corbin just hopes this inspires others, despite race or gender, to join a field that helps so many. Her biggest advice: stay in school, study hard, and follow your dreams.

She says her parents have been her driving force and been super supportive.

For now, she's focusing on her new job but she eventually would like to be trained to be a paramedic.
