Fireworks can trigger PTSD for veterans

For some, fireworks during 4th of July celebrations can trigger post-traumatic stress disorder.

47 ABC spoke to Dr. Kathryn Seifert, a local psychologist who says a veteran's brain tends to be hyper-excited due to their military experience.

Something that sounds like an explosion could make them feel like they're in danger. Their reaction is automatic and uncontrollable.

Some symptoms to look out for avoidance, tensing of the body, or even jumping to the ground once noise goes off.

Dr. Seifert says, "There are all kinds of different reactions. So what is really important is their families or friends or whoever they're going to the fireworks with, they talk about what reaction he/she might have or what he or she would like for them to do. That would be helpful."

If you're a veteran and you're unsure of how you may react to fireworks, Dr. Seifert recommends that you go with someone who knows your reactions and knows how to help.
