Family carries on decades old tradition, snow cone booth

"We still always come to fair."
Kimo's Hawaiian Shave ice is a Delaware state fair tradition that's been around for over three decades. Karen Heyd says shave ice biz is a family affair.
Her family tells us that close to 20 of them work at Kimo's year after year. At its start, Kimo's was just a stand at the fair But expanded into so much more.
Karen Heyd, Kimos owner said, "Back in the beginning we did car shows, we did little league games, we'd be there for refreshments, we did horse shows and we did all kinds of events."
Karen says after living in Hawaii for close to nine years she felt it only fair to bring some Hawaiian flavor to her roots on the eastern shore.
Originally from Delaware, Karen says the State Fair was the perfect place to set up shop.
As for the Hawaiian flavors, check out li hing mui which means dried prune in Hawaiian. But if Hawaiian flavors aren't really your thing, you can always try the local favorite.
Karen said, "I have to say my son-in-law is from Maryland introduced me to egg custard but it's delicious it IS Delicious!"
Karen's kids serve as her experts, who tell us shaved ice is just better!
Daylen Sears, one of the family members said, "Snow cones are more crunchy, so it gives it more of a soft flavor with the shave ice."
Karen's family continues to travel to the fair year after year from all across the country.
She tells us they just can't get enough of the state fair.
