DelDOT hopes to help pollinator populations with wildflowers

Flowers are blooming along Delaware's nearly 14,000 miles of roadside, and that's largely thanks to the Delaware Department of Transportation.

DelDOT tells 47ABC they recently learned that pollinators like monarch butterflies and bees are facing a steep decline due to loss of sustainable habitat, so in an effort to support pollinators, they began incorporating more native species and clover into its seed mixes, and have moved to a reduced mowing regimen.

C.R. McLeod, the DelDOT Communications Director said, "We're able to right now, we have primarily been piloting that program along Route 1 if you're traveling north or south up and down the state you'll see that our main median areas are, they may look overgrown, but that's actually now becoming intentional."

DelDOT tells 47ABC that this is really a win win situation, because they will be spending less tax payer dollars on things like mowing grass, while also helping populations of pollinators thrive.
