Bad weather doesn’t keep fairgoers away

"The rain's not going to keep your dedicated Delawarean fairgoers away," said fairgoer Abby Betts Roberts.

Saturday afternoon had many visitors singing rain rain go away as the third day of the Delaware State Fair brought some liquid sunshine. But that's not stopping fairgoers from getting in on the fun.

"It's rain, you're not going to die. You put on ponchos, you get an umbrella and at the end of the day you dry off," said fairgoer April Lentz.

"You just sort of suck it up and deal with it. So you put on the raincoat or you don't and you just have fun," said Roberts.

When it's raining it may not seem like there's much to do but at the Delaware State Fair you can sample something new, shop around, and most importantly stay dry. And in that attempt to stay somewhat dry, visitors are spending most of the day doing activities inside or at least under tents. Hoping that the rain will let up.

"They come into the building, they see more stuff in here. Sometimes people come in who wouldn't normally come into the buildings and look at some of the vendor's stuff," said vendor Darrell Chichester.

Plus, there are some advantages to coming to the fair on a rainy day.

"You don't have to stand in line for that cheese steak or that milkshake or those funnel cakes or anything, you might have a problem finding a dry spot to sit," said Roberts.

And for an event like this that comes once a year, fairgoers aren't going to let a little rain stand in their way.

"This is a tradition, you come out every year whether it's raining or it's not you just come to have fun it's just something we've done every single year," said Lentz.

Because of the rain the rides at the fair are closed for the day, but weather permitting they'll be open tomorrow.
