$10.5M bond set for major Wicomico County projects

Some of Wicomico County's local staples are about to get a major facelift courtesy of $10.5 million in funding.

"This money is really amazing because we have a lot of renovations and projects that we need to take care of in our schools and this $5.1 million is certainly going to help us with those renovation projects," explains Paul Butler with Wicomico Public Schools.

Wicomico County Public Schools are set to get half of that $10.5 and that means that students and teachers can expect to see signs of repairs in not just one but eight different schools.

"You look at Pinehurst, we're working at doing a secured vestibule which is very, very important to keep our people safe. And the track and field at Mardela, this has been in the works for a long time and  finally we'll be able to get it done," Butler continues, "The roof obviously needs to be done at Glen Avenue, renovations at Delmar Elementary School, at Parkside and WiHi they both have to have their retrofits of their auditorium."

But our local schools aren't the only places that will benefit. Another $5.2 million will help the Sheriff's Office build a brand new public safety complex.

Sheriff Mike Lewis says, "It will be more centrally located where were receiving a bulk of our calls and I want those who live on the Westside to know that this office is going to be essentially built in their backyard."

It's a safety complex that Sheriff Lewis says is necessary since the building they're in now has both structural and security issues.

"There is no bullet proof glass, no resisting glass here. You could break into this building with a pocket knife, you know, that's pretty sad. We don't have any brick or mortar here this is a metal building and it has served its purpose."

Nearly $500,000 will go towards new lights for the Wicomico County Stadium and at Fruitland Primary $75,000 will fund a feasibility study.
