Voters: Participation in the primary is just as important as the general election
On Tuesday, people turned out to cast their vote for party nominees, so we tracked them down to ask why it's so important for people to do their civic duty.
William Smith Jr. said, "I''m a veteran of World War II and I know how important it is to represent our country and do what we can to try to improve it."
Kevin Lindsay explained, "When i complain about stuff, I can say I voted and that's just why I'm here today.
Traditionally voter turnout in the primary is low, but the voters we spoke with say voting in this election is just as important as voting for the president. that's why they encourage everyone to get out and vote.
Deborah Finkbeiner said "I think it's a great time to really investigate who you want to represent you."
Tom Taylor explains, "I'm always hoping for a large turnout in any election because it's very important as a citizen to show your elected officials that you're paying attention.
Voters we spoke to also say younger Americans need to show up at the polls too.
When we asked them how they would convince them to get out and cast their vote – this is what they came up with.
William Smith encourages, "do it, get out and do it. it really is very important"
Deborah also said, "if we want to keep any resemblance of our democracy moving forward then i think its important to vote."
One voter we spoke to even remarked how today's generation – doesn't have the same appreciation for the simple fact that they have the right to vote.
Isabelle Smith tells us, "in our generation, growing up, we couldn't wait to get to the polls"
Overall, regardless of party affiliation, the message was simple.
Whether you want things to stay the same – or change – getting out to vote is important.
