Police:Shooting and high speed chase investigation in Cambridge

"I just woke up to shots firing off and I come out and they tell me that the person who is like a brother to me was shot by cops," said Cambridge resident Jordan Greene.

A community is left in shock after a Cambridge resident was left fighting for his life after he was shot by police during a high speed car chase.

"It is really devastating to know that something like this could've happened to any one of us and it happened to somebody that's so close to us at the same time," said Greene.

Officials say Cambridge police responded to the 700 block of St. Clair Avenue after the suspects mother called police stating that her son was chasing his naked girlfriend down the street. Police responded to the scene where the victim then told officials the suspect had stolen her car.

"The suspect was spotted later by other officers in the area. Attempts to stop the vehicle were made and were disregarded by the suspect," said Maryland State Police spokesman DaVaughn Parker.

That's when police say the suspect, who's name is not being released at this time, attempted to go down a one way street where an officer was trying to block the suspect's car. The officer allegedly told the suspect to stop and get out of the car. Police say the suspect initially slowed down, but then accelerated the stolen vehicle  and drove directly at the officer.

"The officer being in fear of his life withdrew his department issued weapon and fired at the vehicle. The vehicle still was traveling at the officer when those fires were shot," said Parker.

Officials say the  suspect continued driving and hit the officer in his leg and foot, but did not sustain life threatening injuries. The suspect was arrested a short time later and flown to the University of Maryland's Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore where his condition is still unknown. And this incident has one local neighborhood wanting a better future for it's community.

"We just want better. I know it's got to start with us and that's why I'm trying to get everybody that's around me to get on the same page that i'm on so that they can actually see we want better not just hear it because actions speak louder than words," said Greene.

Officials tell 47 that the suspect is alive and that charges against him are pending at this time.

Police add that the investigation is still on going. If you have any information regarding the incident call the Maryland State Police at 410-653-4200
