Accomack Co. residents head to the polls for Virginia’s Primary Election

In Virginia, where voters have been hitting the polls since 6 AM Tuesday morning.

Now this isn't as big as the general election but the primary election is still important since it determines who's on the ballot in November.

One resident says the importance of this election is that they get to pick a candidate that they like in order to run against the other party.

Voters can pick two Democratic and two Republican candidates for the House seat. They'll also choose three Republican candidates to go against Democratic U.S. Senator Tim Kaine.

With over 23,000 registered voters in Accomack County, the primary election only sees about 5% of those faces.

Despite the small numbers and contrary view, each vote still counts.

Chincoteague resident, Nancy Lane says, "Now more than ever we have to be involved in our elections and we just can't assume things are going to happen."

And Marjorie Hiob tells 47 ABC, "If you're a citizen of this county, you really need to get out and express your views. Your opinion counts."

We're told they will have the unofficial results tonight but it will take a week or two to release the official results.
