Two UMES alumni pay it forward by donating caps and gowns

With summer quickly approaching, graduates are excited to walk across the stage.

But what if you didn't have the opportunity to purchase the pricey cap and gown?

An alumni couple from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore decided to hand down the best graduation gift of all.

They've donated over 20 caps and gowns for those who can't afford it.

The engaged couple realized they didn't need this type of attire anymore and even posted on social media to see who else wanted to donate.

It will work as a loaner, in order for you to celebrate the big day. They've also dry cleaned them, so they are ready to wear for the commencement ceremony.

Alumnus Cardel Louis-Jacques says, "Knowing that some kids don't have the support or ability to work while on campus or somewhere else, so they don't have the money financially so it feels good to give it back."

And alumna Shanicia Hanson tells 47 ABC, "Everyone looks forward to celebrating this with their family, so let’s try to target that and make those students who aren’t able to afford it get that one opportunity."

The couple says they plan to do this ever year.

If you're also interested in donating a cap and gown, you can reach out to the UMES loaner closet at 410-651-6676.
