Two thrown from vehicle in Del. crash; one in critical condition

Troopers say impairment was a factor in a crash that resulted in the driver and passenger being thrown from the vehicle, in Delaware.

Delaware State Police say on Sunday, just before 7:20 PM, a single-vehicle crash happened on Old Stage Road, south of Whitesville Road, in Delmar. Troopers say 35-year-old Juan Gomez-Gomez, of Laurel, was traveling northbound on Old Stage Road at a high rate of speed while passing other vehicles. Law enforcement says the GMC experienced a rear tire blow out which caused Gomez-Gomez to lose control.

According to the report, the vehicle then went off the roadway, overturning multiple times, resulting in the 35-year-old and his passenger being ejected from the vehicle. Authorities say Gomez-Gomez was taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC), where he was treated for minor injuries.

Officials say the passenger, a 30-year-old Laurel man, was taken to PRMC and admitted in critical condition.

DSP reports that warrants are currently on file charging Gomez-Gomez with vehicular assault 1st degree, dui, unreasonable speed and no valid license. Police say arrest action is pending pending extradition from Maryland, where he is being held as an out of state fugitive.

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to call Sgt. A. Mendez of Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit at 302-644-5020.
