Turner honored with place in Bennett memorial garden

The late Sgt. Major Wardell Turner was honored Thursday afternoon at the James M Bennett Memorial Guarden.

On hand were students from Bennett, and members Turner's family.

A graduate in 1984, Turner died serving his nation in Afghanistan in 2014 when his vehicle was hit by an explosive.

A brick was laid at the Memorial Garden in front of the school, once again showing the strength of the Bennett community.

"That's a wonderful thing that Bennett has, a support from their family and team members, current team members that knew nothing of him," said Wendy James, Wardell's older sister.  "Especially the school that he played for and was on the championship team for two years, I want to say '83 and '84, because he graduated in '84, so this was truly an honor for them to do this, and put the brick down in his honor."

Also inducted into the memorial garden was Tracy Gibson, her son Troy Gibson was on hand to deliver remarks.
