Salisbury Police Department hold 2nd annual ‘Cops on Roof Tops’ event for Special Olympics

You may have seen some familiar faces on top of Salisbury's Chick Fil- A's roof this Saturday morning. The Salisbury Police Department spent their day raising money for the Maryland Torch Run for the Special Olympics by selling hats and t-shirts from the ground, while other officers stood on the roof to catch attention. Law Enforcement officers representing all of Wicomico County will be on the run Monday, June 4th to take part in the Torch Run Relay for the Special Olympics. The run is fundraising movement that began in 1986 with a handful of officers raising $5,000 and has grown into a year-round effort involving thousands of officers and sponsors raising millions of dollars annually.

"We're hoping to go until 4 o'clock or until all the shirts are sold, right now we're flying through the shirts and hats I don't think we have anymore hats left,we're flying through the shirts so it's going well. At the end of the day its all about giving back to the community and that's why we all do this we're all volunteering time today to come out here. We have great fun with it anyway but it's giving back to the community and doing something for a great cause," said Salisbury Police Department Detective Jason Caputo.

Officials add the relay is an important and celebrated part of every Special Olympics competition. Without the funds raised by those dedicated to the Torch Run efforts across this state, and across the world, Special Olympics would not be able to provide the inspiring opportunities that they do for the incredible athletes.
