Rising temperatures cause growing mosquito population

As the days become hotter, the more homeowners need to be aware of what's to come, mosquitoes and lots of them.

The good news is residents can take measures on their own properties to help reduce mosquito populations.

The best thing to do is to get rid of any areas in your yard that could become a place where mosquitos can lay their eggs, so any place where there is standing water.

For example, pet bowls, make sure you put fresh water in every day because that water can easily become a breeding ground for larve as well as other outdoor containers and toys.

"Make sure after the sprinkler system is done you go out and empty all the water in the toys after a rain you do the same thing because children's toys, bottles of water, containers that are empty just hanging around all of those things can collect water, you want to eliminate that," explains Ginny Rosenkranz, UMD Extension Educator.

You also want to keep trash cans and rain barrels covered because on hot days it only takes about three days for eggs to turn into mosquitos. So make sure you're constantly checking any containers that could be holding water.
