Officials release safety tips as hurricane season approaches

According to the Department of Emergency Services we're less than a month away from hurricane season. Officials say the season begins in June and lasts until November. They add that hurricanes can cause catastrophic damage to coastlines and can produce wind speeds more than 100 miles per hour.
Officials add floods and flying debris from the excessive winds are often the deadly and destructive results of these hurricanes. And now they're offering tips in order to keep you safe this season.

"The storm surge that's associated with it when people will not evacuate when asked to do that or recommended to do that. That's the biggest killer as far as the storms are concerned. There's an analogy that says you hide from the wind and you run from the water and that's true,"said director David Shipley.

Shipley adds that families should always have an emergency preparedness kit on hand that includes water, non perishable food, flash lights, and a first aid kit.
