Officials: Fire causes $20K in damages at Kent Co. food facility; one taken to hospital

Authorities have identified the cause of a fire after they say a Kent County food facility employee was taken to the hospital as a result of the incident.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office says on Wednesday, a fire was reported shortly before 11:30 AM, at a building in the 1100 block of Pine Street, in Houston. Officials say the fire was discovered by workers inside the Paris Food Facility.

According to the report, the Houston Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene with the fire happening inside the building and on the roof. Assistance from from Carlisle Fire Co, Harrington, Farmington, Felton, Greenwood, and Bowers fire companies was requested during the incident. Fire officials say say the fire was placed under control at 12:45 PM.

Authorities report that one worker was taken to Bayhealth in Milford for a medical emergency.

Investigators determined the blaze was caused by a failure that happened inside a concentrator unit, which is a heating device, used as part of the refrigeration process.

Officials say the incident caused $20,000 in damages.
