Neighbors react to officer involved shooting in Salisbury

In the early hours of Monday morning while most of us were sound asleep, one ordinarily quiet Salisbury Neighborhood was woken up to the sound of gun shots.

Maryland State Police tell 47ABC troopers from their Salisbury Barrack were forced to fire at a man after he charged at them with a knife.

We're told it all happened in the 200 block of Hall Drive in Salisbury around 2:30 AM.

47ABC spoke with neighbors, and one woman tells us she actually heard the gunshots go off herself.

That neighbor did not want to be filmed, but said this type of incident is highly unusual for this neighborhood.

The neighbor said, "It's been very quiet, everybody keeps up their home it's just a very nice neighborhood."

An ordinarily quiet neighborhood turned to chaos Monday morning as police and other emergency personnel responded to the scene of an officer involved shooting.

Police say it all started when they received a call from a mother trying to get her son, 38-year-old Justin Marshall, to the hospital.

Elena Russo, a Maryland State Police spokeswoman said, "She told police the first time she tried to transport him to the hospital he had jumped out of the vehicle and ran away."

Police responded to the home, and patrolled the area to try and locate Marshall but had no luck.

They told the mother to call them back when Marshall returned home and about an hour later, she did just that.

That's when things took a turn for the worse.

Russo said, "So a little bit more than an hour later about 2:30 in the morning, Marshall did in fact return to the house. Five minutes later, troopers returned a second time, which is when they encountered him in the front yard with a knife."

Police tell 47ABC that without hesitation, Marshall charged at troopers, making verbal threats with the knife in his hand as if to do harm to the troopers.

Russo said, "[The troopers] responded as they are trained at discharging their department issued handguns and they ended up wounding the man and he was transported to Peninsula Regional where he is undergoing medical treatment."

We spoke to one neighbor who actually heard the commotion as she was on her porch reading a book.

That neighbor said, "sounded like three gun shots, and then it was a person moaning, and that's when I went and got my cell phone and called 911."

Now we actually knocked on the door of Justin Marshall's home on Monday. Marshall's father answered the door but declined to comment, clearly emotional from the day's events.

Now residents say they don't feel as safe in their neighborhood as they once did before.

A neighbor said, "A little frightened, You know?"

We are told that the two troopers involved in this shooting were not injured.

Those troopers have been placed on administrative leave as part of routine protocol.

The investigation into this case is ongoing and we will continue to provide you with updates on our social media and website as we learn more.
