Memorial Day Weekend woes; accidents under investigation

Memorial Day has brought congestion, delays and accidents and according to officials, attempts to avoid the high traffic areas may be to blame.

In Delaware at least two major accidents sent people to the hospital over the weekend.

Three people were hospitalized after a serious car crash in Bethany Beach on Sunday and officials are still investigating a car collision in Millville.

According to the PIO for the Millville Volunteer Fire Company, Tony Petralia, Jr., these events highlight a troubling new trend.

"Our ambulance units and our paramedic units have just been run to death," said Petralia, Jr.

"They weren’t stopping, and they were going here from hospital to hospital to hospital back not getting any breathing time at all," Petralia, Jr. said.

According to officials, the number of calls for Emergency Medical Services has increased almost 30 percent since Friday, May 25.

Two accidents took place near Burbage Road and Powell Farm Roads that left officials overwhelmed.

"We had several on Burbage Road at Powell Farm Roads yesterday and within the span of 24 hours there was two accidents there," he said.

According to officials, people from out of the area are most likely to find themselves in trouble simply because they aren't familiar with the local roadways.

And with more accidents, comes more traffic and chances for pedestrians to get hit.

Officials are also investigating how a 76-year-old man driving his bike in Ocean View got struck by a car on Saturday, May 26.

"What do I think about all the traffic? Ugh, terrible!," said Maggie Feiler, an Ocean View resident.

"They need to pay attention to being so close to people and the bicyclists, you got to respect that," said Feiler.

In Maryland police are also still investigating a fatal motorcycle accident on May 26 that killed 43-year-old Armondo Bond of Staten Island, N.Y.

The incident put Coastal Highway at a complete standstill for about three hours in the afternoon.

The next day, a jet ski crash left a woman seriously injured; one of them driving at a speed of about 35 miles per hour.

"In Ocean City unfortunately we had a fatal motorcycle collision on Saturday, so it certainly is not something you'd ever want to see, said the Ocean City Police Department PIO, Lindsay Richards.

"And, now throughout the summer it's going to be really busy in town so we encourage everyone to drive safely," said Richards.
