Gov. Carney signs bill allowing Delawareans to take home alcohol

House Bill 284 was signed by Governor John Carney on Tuesday. The bill allows licensees who sell a bottle of alcohol, other than beer, to place a cap on the bottle and allow customers to take it home with them for consumption later on.

Governor Carney says wineries, breweries and the like have been springing up all across the First State, and these types of establishments are attractive particularly to young people.

The Governor thinks this move will help attract more businesses to the First State.

Governor John Carney said, "That's not just important for tourism and hospitality, but its really important as we try to sell Delaware to companies that want to come here they want to come to a place where their young employees can have some fun and enjoy life."

Local wineries say this is a common sense bill.

We spoke to the owner of Salted Vines Vineyard and Winery who told us the bill will actually help consumers and residents more than local businesses, because it is a convenience and safety bill for them.

The biggest hope is that it will help cut down on drinking and driving.

Adrian Mobilia, the owner of Salted Vines Vineyard and Winery said, "Previously, you would have to have the uncomfortable conversation with them of you either have to consume all that and by the way don't over-consume or you need to forfeit it and leave it here and the people don't like doing that as you can imagine, so I think this is a win more for the consumers, but it makes it convenient for everybody."

Governor Carney says this was already something that restaurants and other venues could do, so it was important to level the playing field.
