Delaware mail carriers to help ‘Stamp Out Hunger’

Delaware beaches aren't the only ones gearing up for the summer, food banks are also prepping for the season.
One way they are doing that is through an initiative called 'Stamp Out Hunger'. This Saturday, May 12th Delaware mail carriers will be working with local pantries to collect food donations.
One way you can help is by leaving a bag with non-perishable foods next to your mailbox. Mailmen have left Food Lion bags in many mailboxes for residents to participate. Postmen will take those bags of donations and take them to local food banks.
The Food Bank of Delaware bank says this initiative comes at a critical time because Delawareans are faced with food insecurity year round.
"After the holidays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, donations drop drastically. So during the summer time food pantries come to us looking for donations so this helps us get through a lot of the summer months," says Ruthann Messick, from the Food Bank of Delaware.
The food bank asks to not include glass jars. They add their most needed items are peanut butter, pasta, and canned vegetables.
