As warmer weather hits, officials warn residents of leaving children and pets in hot cars

As we head into the summer months, the temperatures are getting a lot warmer, but officials say with the warmer weather comes more calls about children and pets trapped inside of hot cars.

Police say far too many children and pets have been inadvertently left in vehicles. Some can even suffer from potentially deadly heat strokes if they're left in there too long. Now officials are offering tips to make sure you or your loved ones don't have to live through these kinds of tragedies that occur all to often such as creating reminders by putting something in the back seat next to your child so you don't forget them.

"Temperatures inside of vehicles can get really hot and the dangers are significant that can occur to children and animals and it can cause heat stroke even up to death and we see it several times throughout this state and across the nation every year," said Snow Hill Police Department Chief Tom Davis.

Officials add that if you do see a child or pet trapped inside a vehicle on a hot day you should call your local authorities, but if you feel as though the child or pet's life is in imminent danger you could break the cars window to get them out.
