Woodbridge Middle School expands after school program

The Woodbridge Middle School recently announced a 230,000 dollar grant to help grow its after school program.

The award was given to the school by the U.S. Department of Education.

"We applied back in January [in partnership with the University of Delaware], and we heard just recently that we were one of I think five schools in the state to get this new large funding to run our after school program," said Michelle Cook, the after school program coordinator.

The after school program will now run for four days a week instead of only two.

The school will also be able to have its first summer program, which includes science, technology, engineering and mathematics activities.

"They'll get more time with us, which leads to more time for tutoring, more time for mentoring and more time for helping them with their academics," said Cook.

The school also hopes the community will be more involved with the new grant.

"One of our focuses as a school has been to increase our community involvement with any and all communities – Hispanics, African American and our Caucasian families – all of them to really just do what we can do to involve parents and bring them into the school," said the Principal, Tina Morroni.
