Wicomico County Board Of Education calls proposed budget ‘disappointing’

School officials in Wicomico County are raising concerns over the education funding numbers in the County executive's proposed budget, stating that they are "disappointing."

The Wicomico County Board of Education says that as it stands right now the budget only provides what's called "maintenance of effort" which is the bare minimum amount of funding that the county is required to receive.

So far the The County Executive has recommended an increase of only $646,811 which is the same amount of funding that was laid out for the current 2018 budget.

Superintendent Dr. Donna Hanlin says:

"Our three main priorities of: beginning  Universal Prekindergarten program, providing new pathways to improve our graduation rate, and ensuring that we are able to attract and retain a high-performing workforce in our schools cannot be implemented with just MOE funding.”

However, this funding is not yet set in stone and the budget could change over the course of the development process. The Wicomico County Council will have a public budget hearing that will take place on Tuesday May 1st at 6 PM.
