Salisbury Zoo welcomes new baby wallaby

The Salisbury Zoo recently announced its newest addition to the family.

One of their female wallabies, Petunia, was pregnant with a baby joey since November of last year, according to officials.

"This is the first wallaby birth at the zoo, so this is a big deal even though we're still in the final stages of finishing our Discover Australia Exhibit that was funded by the Perdue and Richard A. Henson foundations," said the Zoo Director, Ralph Piland.

Piland said the joey started popping its head after 6 months of growing inside the mom's pouch. So, only a few lucky guests have been able to catch a glimpse of the new baby.

Officials hope the joey will be out of the mom's pouch more during the mid-summer when it turns 9 months old.

Its gender is yet to be known.
