Salisbury bypass construction nearing completion, OC bridge project underway

Road crews are hard at work to finish this massive $24 million project in time for Memorial Day weekend.
"This is our project to rehabilitate 11 bridges on the Salisbury Bypass in about two years. It's a really ambitious project, we've been at it for a little over a year and a half now were coming down the home stretch," says SHA Spokesperson Bob Rager.
The project doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's instrumental for the maintenance of Route 50 and the 11 bridges set for completion.
"The maintenance system, preservation they're so important in keeping our bridges and roadways up to date and modernized and making sure everything is safe for everybody," explains Rager.
To motorists here on Delmarva its hasn't been the most pleasant of road projects, but thanks to drivers being patient the project is right on schedule.
"It would have taken just about two years to do each of these bridges individually, so again we're doing 11 of these in a about two years and knocking it out and we could not have done this without the cooperation of the motorists."
And just in time for this area's busiest weekend, Memorial Day. But of course, this home stretch will bring just a few more road closures for motorists.
"We are probably going to have to do a few ramp closures, maybe some temporary closures in the next week, week and a half to take care of the paving. We will have detour signs out when we do that. We'll give you plenty of notice its not going to last that long," says Rager.
Now the Salisbury Bypass isn't the only road construction drivers should be aware of here on the shore. That's because SHA also has projects in Ocean City.
The Harry W. Kelly Memorial Bridge on Route 50 that goes into Ocean City will be closing again for more repairs.
Earlier this month, the bridge was closed to repair a small crack in a single steel beam. Now SHA is planning on closing it again, this time for possibly a whole week.
Like before, all traffic will be detoured to the Maryland Route 90 bridge.
"We've got a couple more overnight closures coming up and we made sure to schedule those so they're off peak so were doing that work at the time there's least amount of traffic on the road and of course we want to get that done before the busy summer travel season as well," explains Rager.
47 ABC will be monitoring the various projects around the Eastern Shore and will give you the latest on any road closures.
