Residents Celebrate Earth Day at Salisbury Zoo

"The real earth is the green that surrounds us and without that we will not have an earth to live in," said ranger Thomas Miller.

On Saturday, dozens of children and their families flocked to the Salisbury Zoo to celebrate earth day and learn all about the environment and the importance of protecting it.

"What you can do to protect earth because we're all about land protection and protecting the species and habitats that are out there," said Miller.

Exhibitors were stationed all throughout the zoo promoting environmental awareness and teaching visitors how they can be better caretakers of the planet.

"There's lots of families and it's not just about educating the people that live in the city now but the next generation," said The Green Team president Kacey Martin.

Event goers learned everything from how to continue to keep the planet green to learning the basics of recycling.

"Most people probably wouldn't know pizza boxes are actually not recyclable because of the grease so they go into the landfill," said Martin.

And officials say its important that children continue to learn about the environment because they are the future.

"We want to get a lot of families especially kids to kind of teach them about recycling because the planet is theirs after us we hand off the reigns and we want to try and make it as clean as possible," said Martin.

"We need to start with the kids and get them out into our natural world and our natural places and just let them see the beauty that's out there," said Miller.

Other easy things you can do on a daily basis to help the environment include buying locally grown produce, carpooling, cutting back on water bottle usage, and unplugging appliances when they aren't being used.
