Ocean City Adopt Your Beach Month proclaimed

The Ocean City Council has designated April 2018 as Adopt Your Beach month in Ocean City.

The program was initiated by the Ocean City Surf Club and the town's Green Team about three years ago to help keep the beaches clean.

"We concentrate a lot on the environment and on the issues that affect this town," said Tommy Vach, president of the Surf Club.

"So, it's important for us as a non-profit to get involved and get this community involved with the environmental issues," said Vach.

The program allows residents and local businesses to "adopt" sections of the beach to go out with trash bags and other equipment to clean the areas they've adopted.

"The beach is very, very clean, and we just think this [program] puts top spin on top of it," said Council Member, Tony DeLuca.

There were originally over 147 blocks up for adoption when the program first started, and now, only two remain. However, officials say a block can be adopted by more than one group.

"Even duplication is great because you have three or four sessions of clean up and if we could have two or three groups doing it that would be 12, which is fantastic," said DeLuca, who is also the council's liaison on the Green Team.
