MSP reminds drivers about the multiple ways you can get fined for distracted driving

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
Most of us tend to think that distracted driving is just using a cellphone behind the wheel.
But it means so much more. And Maryland State Police want to make sure you understand that it can include multiple actions.
Distracted driving can involve eating, grooming, or even watching a video.
MSP tells us they've even seen people shaving or a reading a book.
We're told anything that can take your eyes off the road is key indicator of someone not paying attention. But the biggest threat they are looking for is texting while driving.
Trooper Benjamin Pollmeier, from MSP Salisbury's Barrack says, " We're looking for cell phone violations. That's primarily the offense we are looking for and those vary from texting or talking on your cell phone."
The fine for distracted driving in Maryland is $83 for the first offense, $140 for the second, and $160 for the third. You don't get any points, unless it results in a crash.
But beyond that, it's all about safety. On average, about 27,000 people are injured or killed per year as a result of distracted driving.
