Green light for golf carts in Crisfield

Crisfield residents and visitors now have a new way to freely get around town thanks to a new bill signed into law by Gov. Larry Hogan on Tuesday.
"The governor passed a new law with respects to our golf carts that basically anybody can use the state roads and county roads for traversing around Crisfield," says Crisfield Police Chief Michael Tabor.
It's a change that a lot of people in Crisfield have been waiting for after a law change in 2016 allowed people to drive golf cars around the city, except for any county and state roads. Meaning people had to find alternate routes to get where they wanted.
"It was very complicated. I mean there were certain areas you could cross over certain areas you couldn't. For instance Maryland Avenue and Richardson Avenue. The main street into town and out of town you couldn't drive that because of the fact that that was a state highway," explains Tabor.
And in a town that relies on golf carts in the summer, it made it difficult not only for residents but summer visitors and boaters trying to get around Crisfield too.
"We at the marina do the best we can we get our boaters where they need to go but something like this where they can just rent a golf cart a little cheaper than a car, go down to the restaurants, go out to Food Lion. When it's 90 degrees in the summer it's a little hard to get your ice cream back to the boat so hopefully this will help that," says Tom Schislar of Somers Cove Marina.
But luckily now, visitors and residents have a stress-free way to get around town.
"People come there and now can go up and down on golf carts and the highway, go to Food Lion, you know, shop go to the stores. I mean that's a great thing for Crisfield."
It's a new law that will make it a little easier on everyone in the city.
On Tuesday, April 24, the Crisfield Police Department will hold a meeting regarding the new golf cart law updates. The meeting is set for 6:00 PM at City Hall.
