Controversial Ocean City Bill One Step Closer To Becoming Law

Ocean city officials say they're optimistic after a controversial bill in Annapolis is one step closer to becoming law. Senate Bill 872 sponsored by Senator Jim Mathias has already passed the Senate, but now the bill that it was cross filed with, House Bill 1406 sponsored by Delegate Mary Beth Carozza, has passed it's second reading in the house. If passed the bill would declare the Town of Ocean City a special events zone. Something law enforcement say will make it easier to keep the public safe during motor events such as Cruisin.
"The idea that ocean city during those events will be deemed a special events zone slowing, the slowing of motorists and more control of motorists and their vehicles for us its about public safety and it's the safety of our citizens so we're very grateful and very fortunate," said Police Chief for the Ocean City Police Department Ross Buzzuro.
If passed, the bill would allow speed limit reductions in areas designated as special event zones. A person convicted of violating the speed limit posted in the special event zone could face a fine of up to $1,000.
