Be aware of new Medicare card scam

Senior citizens here on Delmarva should be aware of a new scam going around in regards to the new Medicare cards that are rolling out this month.

As many of you may know, Medicare is beginning to send out brand new insurance cards that will no longer have your Social Security number on it, instead it will be a randomized number.

Because of the change, scammers are working hard pretending to be from the Social Security Administration and if area seniors aren't careful, they could be the next victim.

"Social Security doesn't call so it's all just a scam that they are trying to pull over on folks that are on Medicare. So again, never give out your Social Security Number because they have it, they don't need you to verify it and they would never ask you to verify it," says Michelle Parker, from MAC State Health Insurance Program.

Senior citizens in Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia are among the first to receive the new cards. Once you receive them, make sure you destroy the old card that has your Social Security number on it.
