UMES set to see increased federal funding

UMES is one of many historically black universities across the nation that will be seeing a boost in funding from the federal government.
In the federal omnibus bill signed into law Friday HBCU's will receive a 14-percent funding increase.
This funding will go a long way for UMES, where officials tell us this can help put their institution on a more even playing field with other institutions.
Funding has historically gone to support academic programs, student support programs, career services, and help enhance the school's infrastructure, which can help attract more students.
"The funding helps support student fellowships and support buy equipment and research and help us to attract better quality faculty as well," said UMES President Dr. Juliette Bell.
Also of note, these funds will go to help with funding for grad programs at the school. There is also an increase in Pell grants, which more than half of students currently enrolled are eligible for to help them get in and stay in school.
