DSP: Alleged armed robber in custody as result of Greenwood traffic stop

Thomas Mitchell, 37, of Greenwood

A man is in custody on multiple charges, after troopers say he was involved in an armed robbery and arrested during a traffic stop, in Sussex County.

Delaware State Police say on Monday, just before 7:40 PM, troopers responded to Al's Country Store, in the 4900 block of Hickman Road, in Greenwood. Once on scene, troopers say an employee reported that a man, dressed in all black clothing had entered the store with a handgun and demanded all of the money in the register. The victim apparently complied with the suspect's demands and turned over an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspect, who authorities described as wearing black pants, a black hooded sweatshirt with the hood up, a black leather jacket, a black ski mask, and gloves, then fled the scene in a silver pickup truck with its tailgate down, which prevented the victim from seeing the registration plate.

Shortly after that point, authorities say the Bridgeville Police Department and the Greenwood Police Department pulled over a silver pickup truck with the tailgate down and identified the driver as 37-year-old Thomas Mitchell, of Greenwood. Mitchell apparently matched the description of the suspect and he was taken into custody, police say. Law enforcement reports that a .25 caliber gun and  a loaded magazine was removed from the  front passengers seat of the truck.

According to the report, a search of Mitchell yielded counterfeit money, and a search of his vehicle revealed that he put tape on the vehicle's registration plate and model description alongside of the truck.

He was charged with robbery first degree, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, aggravated menacing, wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, forgery first degree, and failure to display a license plate.

Mitchell was then turned over to Sussex Correctional Institution on $115,001 cash only bond.
