Ocean City council passes resolution opposing offshore drilling

Off-Shore Drilling will not be coming to Ocean City, at least, not if the town council has anything to say about it.

This week the council passed a resolution making their stance against off-shore drilling official.

Mayor Rick Meehan tells us that the Town has consistently opposed offshore drilling in the past.

Back in 2015, the town passed a resolution opposing "seismic testing," a process that comes before offshore drilling.

Years before that, in 1974, Mayor Harry Kelly also passed a resolution opposing offshore drilling.

Officials say there are countless reasons for their consistent opposition, the main being that they see no benefit to the beach town.

Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan, "We're worried about the environment were worried about not just our beaches you know but the ocean the wildlife everything associated we cant find anything that's beneficial to our community or to this area to have offshore drilling off the coast of Ocean City in the Atlantic."

Governor Larry Hogan has also announced his opposition of offshore drilling.

Ocean City Town officials hope the federal government will respect their resolution.
