Lewes Polar Bear plunge includes 3,000 participants, raises $800k

The 27th annual Lewes Polar Bear Plunge that benefits Special Olympics Delaware took place on Sunday.

According to Special Olympics, 3,228 participants showed up and $875,000 was raised, in Rehoboth Beach. The air temperature was reportedly recorded at 47 degrees and the water was 37 degrees during the 1:00 p.m. plunge.

The event, sponsored by Wawa, has now raised almost $11 million in its 27 year history.

Special Olympics Delaware provides sports training and competition opportunities for more than 4,200 Delaware residents of all ages who have intellectual disabilities.
