Deputies: Nine-year-old identity theft incident remains under investigation in Queen Anne’s Co.

February 23, 2018
Tahja Cropper,

Authorities are investigating an unknown identity theft case after deputies say an account was opened nine years ago using a woman's information. The incident was recently discovered in Queen Anne's County.

The Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Department says on Wednesday, a woman reported that she attempted to open a Sprint cellular service account, where she she was informed that an account was already open under her social security number.

Authorities say the victim was informed that the account had been opened nine years ago and this was the first time the victim was notified about the account. Deputies say that there was also an outstanding balance of $367 on the account.

The victim was advised on the steps to take in contacting the Social Security Administration and credit bureaus.

This case remains under investigation.
