With mother nature on our side, roads improve

The cars are back and the roadways now passable, a night and day difference compared to last week.
"The winds have calmed down and it's giving us a chance to get through a lot of the roads and get them passable," says Lee Outen, Supervisor for Wicomico County Roads Division.
Finally, what road crews have been waiting for, calmer winds and warmer temperatures.
"This storm is giving us a tough dilemma because salt doesn't work that well below 20 degrees and we were below 20 degrees for 48 hours minimum straight. So it wasn't working very well but today we've seen a huge difference," explains Bill Sterling, Traffic Superintendent for the city of Salisbury.
For now, mother natures on our side giving road crews a chance to smooth over all the roads.
"Our seven snow emergency routes are in above average shape. We're concentrated on residential at this point," says Sterling.
Outen adds, "We're going to concentrate on some of the, just making things smoother to get through. So we;re looking forward to temperatures rising and being able to get through some of the snow and get down to the blacktop."
But the weather isn't expected to be on our side for too long with a wintery mix heading our way that could cause more issues for roads.
"We've got to make sure the inlets are clean so if it rains tonight we don't end up with any flooding and low points on the streets," says Sterling.
And it will also cause some headaches for drivers.
"Anytime you add rain or a wintery mix to a ice packed road, it's even slicker than it was before so then there's going to be the periods where its changing from ice to slushing and back and it's difficult to travel," explains Outen.
Now with the uncertainty of what mother nature has in store for us, the Wicomico County School District is trying to gauge when to open schools again.
Wicomico County students have already had three snow days, and another one is coming.
They announced Monday afternoon, students have Tuesday off.
Not everyone is off the hook though they also announced there will be a 2 hour-delay for 12 month Wicomico public school employees.
