Senator Coons talks about key issues after government shutdown

Because local maters, 47 ABC reached out to Senator Chris Coons about the CHIP program funding.

The Delaware senator says he's happy they made progress on the matter and adds it was a positive to see both parties come together.

However, Coons also says there are still big challenges that lie ahead and the real work begins today.

According to the senator, a bipartisan agreement is needed for dreamers and border security.

Coons adds investing in the Department of Defense for disaster relief funds is also on the radar.

"Our biggest unresolved challenge is coming to agreement on how  much we're going to spend on the Department of Defense and domestic priorities cause we're still operating under something called sequester which requires automatic annual cuts in federal spending, the Secretary of Defense has come to us to stay we need more investment," Coons tells 47 ABC.

Senator coons says they dedicated a lot of time listening to each other this weekend to finally get a resolution and he hopes they can do that again.
