DNREC and DDA propose new state park firearm regulations

Delaware is attempting to make changes to firearm regulations within its state parks.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources (DNREC) and the Delaware Department of Agriculture (DDA) are proposing new firearm regulations.

The two agencies are proposing that visitors may possess firearms in state parks, wildlife areas, and forests unless they are prohibited by the law due to a past conviction for a violent crime or mental health commitment. This would include areas such as trails, unguarded beaches, parking lots,  and vehicles.

The proposed legislation would prohibit guns in certain public areas such as park offices, visitor centers, and stadiums.

"If you are properly permitted to carry a concealed weapon, it outlines that you can do that in any place in the state land, but would have to provide a permit upon request," says Shawn Garvin, Delaware Secretary of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.

The proposed regulations want these designated areas to be identified with proper signage. The state of Delaware will be hosting a series of workshops where folks can get informed about the proposed regulations. The dates, times, and locations of the workshops are:

Kent County: Tuesday, Feb. 20th, 6 PM DNREC R&R Auditorium, 89 Kings Highway, Dover, De, 19901

Sussex County: Thursday, Feb 22, 6 PM Sussex Central High School Auditorium, 26026 Patriots Way, Georgetown, DE, 19947.
