Bail reform bill passes Delaware Senate

While one new bill was being introduced Tuesday, another has already made it to the finish line.

Delaware's bail reform bill (HB204) passing 15 to five, with Sen. Brian Pettyjohn not even casting a ballot.

It's a bill that is not favored by bail bondsmen in Delaware, but their disapproval wasn't enough to sway the Senate's vote against it.

This bill reduces the courts reliance on cash bail.

Courts will now be able to "consider risk" to determine whether a defendant is likely to stay out of trouble and come to court, so judges may now start utilizing house arrest or other means they see fit to make sure the defendant shows up.

Those opposed to it say people's rights are in question and that it will hurt low income people.
