Senator Chris Coons reaction to major tax overhaul

Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.)

Because local matters, 47 ABC spoke to Delaware's Senator Chris Coons to get reaction on this major tax overhaul.

Senator Coons tells us that this will have negative consequences on the economy but also on Delaware's middle class.

We're told significant tax cuts will hit large corporations and wealthy Americans long term but for the middle class, it will affect them short term and taxes will go up.

Senator Coons says they heard from several economists and they say this will add to our deficit by a trillion.

Beyond that, we're told congress could've passed a bi-partisan bill to reduce the corporate tax rate, which would've included middle class tax cuts.

But that didn't happen and now he's left wondering if this bill will have any positive effects.

"I worked with a group of Republicans to try and find an alternative bipartisan path. Ultimately we weren't successful and this was passed by only republican votes. I think history shows us that's not a good way to legislate and if we want to do something as big as this tax reform bill, we should do it in a bipartisan way," Senator Coons tells 47 ABC.

For the last several months, Senator Coons says many concerned citizens voiced their opinions.

And he says a vast majority who called his office, asked him to vote against it. According to his office, the ones with the most concerns are realtors, home owners, and graduate students.
