OC task force hopes to improve growing motor events

From Spring Cruisin' Ocean City to O.C. Bikefest, motor events have become a staple to the town for several years and each year these Cruisin' events get bigger and bigger.

"25 years ago cruising events were developed in Ocean City to bring people to town and over those 25 years those events have grown, but the town has grown also and so have the number of other visitors that come to Ocean City," says Mayor Rick Meehan.

The growing popularity has made it increasingly difficult for local law enforcement to keep Ocean City safe. That's why an OC motor events task force was created.

"What we want to do is get together actively with the police department, with the promoters, with the business community, with residents and all look at this and collectively hopefully come up with some solutions to some of the bigger issues that we feel we need to address."

A task force where everyone has a seat at the table.

Bob Rothermel, a producer for Cruisin' OC, has already come up with suggestions that might help with public safety.

"We felt our mission was to keep the cars in Ocean City so the economics worked well for the business community and now I think we need to expand that horizon and send the cars across Delmarva and hopefully spread the wealth," explains Rothermel.

Although this is only meeting one for the task force, Mayor Meehan says they will continue meeting until solutions are found.

"There's no magical answer and there's never any appeasing everyone, but no our goal is not to make the cruisin' events go away, our goal is to address collectively how we can make them better."

Once the task force completes their meetings, they will send their recommendations to the mayor and council for them to discuss and pass any necessary ordinances.

Mayor Meehan tells us these solutions will definitely be finished before the spring of 2018.
