Maryland officials warn public about charity scams

It's the season of giving, but the Maryland Secretary of State's Office is urging you to be careful with who you give your money to.

They say scam artists posing as charitable organizations are on the rise this holiday season. That's why they're offering tips to keep you from becoming a victim.

They say you should always keep your eye out for the following red flags:

  • If a charity refuses to send you written material,
  • If a charity sends a person out to collect your donation
  • If a charity sends you a statement saying you owe money for a contribution that you never pledged
  • If the organization's name and logo closely resemble another charity with a similar purpose

If you think you've been the victim of a scam or if you want to report a potential scam charity, you can contact the investigations unit at 410-260-3879.
