Federalsburg man dies in crash after reportedly fleeing from deputy in Preston

Deputies say that a Federalsburg man died after crashing into a horse pasture, while fleeing from a deputy in Preston, last Friday afternoon.

According to the Caroline County Sheriff's Office, on November 24 at 2:25 PM, a deputy was patrolling in the area of Maple Avenue and Railroad Avenue, in Preston. At that time, the deputy saw a vehicle speeding east on Railroad Avenue. The vehicle reportedly failed to stop at the intersection that had a stop sign.

The deputy, driving a marked patrol vehicle, reportedly activated his emergency equipment, to try and stop the violator's vehicle. Deputies say that the driver failed to stop for the deputy and fled from Preston onto county roads.

While on Friendship Road, the deputy briefly lost sight of the fleeing vehicle, just before Grove Road. As the deputy approached the area, he found that the vehicle had crashed into a horse pasture, on the south side of the roadway.

The driver and sole passenger, identified as 49-year-old Daniel Patton of Federalsburg, was found to have been ejected from the vehicle during the crash. The deputy immediately called for a response from Fire and E.M.S. He reportedly left his vehicle and rendered appropriate medical care to the driver while awaiting paramedics.

The driver was flown via Maryland State Police Aviation Division to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore where he later died from his injuries.

The Maryland State Police CRASH Team is investigating the crash.
