Somerset Co. raises awareness of opioid epidemic during Halloween

One local county is using Halloween to raise awareness about the opioid crisis.

Tuesday night, members of Somerset County Emergency services passed out candy with messages relating to the opioid crisis.

On them emergency personnel have written messages such as, 'Say no to O', 'O' standing for opioids. They've also put a phone number on the back that folks can call to be connected to resources.

Officials tell us they will be handing out the candy in Crisfield because of a recent spike in overdoses they've seen in the city.

"Hopefully start a conversation when they take the candy home and mom and dad inspect it to make sure its safe, they too can read that message," says Victory Lloyd, a Somerset County Emergency Planner.

Emergency Personnel tell us they are also be working on another initiative called the 'Go Purple Project' which is expected to unveiled next year. They tell us the project is also aimed at bringing attention to the opioid epidemic.
