Salisbury officials debating on where to move historic obelisk

Obelisk in downtown plaza

Salisbury's first piece of public modern art will be moving soon due to the Main Street Master Plan.

The Adkin's obelisk currently stands in the center of the Salisbury plaza.

The monument was made to honor Fred P. Adkins, a community leader of Salisbury who passed away in 1963. It also was made to represent Salisbury's progressive culture.

Part of the Main Street Master Plan involves completely gutting the plaza and changing the direction of the road. This means the obelisk will have to be relocated.

Mayor Jake Day said the city is still trying to figure out a new location for the obelisk. He said, "So the obelisk will come out, and we don't exactly know where it's going to go but it's important, it's dedicated to the memory of Fred Adkins. His family funded this project, so it's important and it's something we want to retain, we just gotta figure out where."

Jake Day said the city will be putting a poll on Salisbury's Facebook page and on Salisbury's website under their citizen services tab where people can weigh in on where they think the obelisk should go.
