Runners raise money to battle childhood cancer

Hundreds of runners braved the cold Thanksgiving morning in Lewes to raise awareness about a good cause, fighting childhood cancer.

For four years in a row the Gabby Gobble 5K has been run on Thanksgiving Day in honor of Gabriella Vogel, a 5-year-old who passed away in 2011 from Diffuse Intra Pontine Glioma (DIPG).

The run is sponsored by the Get Well Gabby Foundation, named after Vogel.

The Foundation raises funds to help research childhood cancer, and recently funded a new oncology playroom at A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children, as well as providing seed money for creating an electronic medical record database.

We are told last year's race raised $27,000.

"When our daughter passed we decided that we really needed to do something to help other kids who are fighting cancer.  And so we do this to help keep her memory alive and to help other kids, because this is not something that we want to see anyone else have to deal with," said Carolynn Vogel, Gabby's mom.

The foundation has also supported nine hospitals nationwide through its book drive.  To learn more on how to help with their cause, go to getwellgabby.org.
