OC continues ongoing beach renourishment project that reduces coastal storm risks

Crews were hard at work bringing sand back onto the beach in Ocean City.

OC apart of the Atlantic Coast Shoreline Protection Project is a coastal storm risk management project aiming to reduce coastal storm risks such as flooding and storm surges.

It has multiple partners, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, the state of Maryland, Worcester County and Ocean City.

This project is essential because it protects a major tourism attraction: the beach.

Ocean city alone reels in over 8 million visitors per year and last summer visitors spent $17 billion in the state of Maryland.

Since starting the project back in the early 1990's officials say they have saved over $700 million in damages.

Renourishments are typically done every four years, the last one taking place in 2014.

The project is expected to be done before the end of the year.
