Knight tops state career rushing record; Smyrna grounds Hodgson

Smyrna running back Will Knight broke former Laurel running back Chris Jones' career rushing record of 6,201 yards in the Eagles 48-8 playoff win on Saturday night over Hodgson.

The record breaking carry came on a 48-yard touchdown run from Knight in the third quarter, his third score of the game. "Im honored to be a part of this and I just want to thank my coaches and teammates because without them, I wouldn't be here," said Knight.

The Eagles took a 8-0 lead in the first quarter when QB Isaiah Wilson hit junior WR Emon Roberts with a 40-yard touchdown pass. The 8-0 lead is the closest that Hodgson would get, with Wilson throwing his second touchdown of the night, hitting Stephon Whaley with a 12-yard score, and taking a 16-0 lead after one quarter.

HVT would get on the board midway thru the second quarter, with freshman quarterback Curt Henry sneaking one in from 1-yard out. But Smryna would strike once more with Knight getting the first of his 3 scores on the night just before the half to give his team a 24-8 lead going into the break.

In the second half, Knight found the endzone twice more, including the 48-yard record breaker. The Eagles moved to 9-2 on the season and will now play Middletown for a chance to win their third consecutive DIAA Division I title. Game time is set for 1 PM on Saturday, at the University of Delaware.
