Delmarva Model Railroad Club’s 32nd Open House draws thousands

Thousands of people make it out to Delmarva Railroad Club's Open House every year to see their unique model trains. Not only is it an amazing piece of art and technology, but the Railroad Club is only open to the public a couple weekends out of the year.

Bill Deeter, the DMRRC's Treasurer, said, "We get 400 or 500 people a day come through the building so you know, a thousand people a weekend or so."

Members of the Railroad Club said their Open House draws a loyal crowd each year.

Jeffrey Shockley, the Editor of the Railroad Club's newsletter said, "We get a lot of people that repeat each other, you know, they come year after year after year, we've seen several kids grow up, actually, they've come so often."

Members believe the annual event brings something unique to Delmar.

Bill Eck, a member of the Railroad Club, said, "Well I think it's a community asset, and you know, the fact that they do this every year, and it's free admission, it's something different. You don't find clubs like this in a lot of places."

Part of what makes the club so unique is the size.

Deeter said, "Trains of pretty much every scale. We have about 8000 square foot in the building and there's seven layouts or eight layouts, something like that."

Another impressive aspect lies in the details.

Judy and Phil Fredrich, visitors all the way from Florida, said, "You really don't know about the detail until you do it yourself. When you have to paint figurines that are an inch high and you're trying to put a smile on a ladies face with a magnifying glass, yeah I can appreciate everything that they do."

So if you're looking to getting into a new hobby, or some free entertainment, the Delmarva Model Railroad Club in Delmar may be a good fit.

Deeter said, "It's great fun for the whole family, it's free, no admission, free parking, we're here next weekend and the first two weekends in January."
